    Karin Munkholm Once upon a time, an unexpected task landed on my desk. I was working as a HR manager, and had previously been quite vocal about the need of building and implementing effective processes across the organisation to support our growth. My previous roles and academic background had provided me with a solid success record of having implemented processes, so in many ways the task found its way to me quite naturally. The task was taking the organization I worked for through a full ISO 9001 certification,- from start to finish. That meant developing and implementing policies, processes and procedures, translating the standard into daily practice, training my colleagues (and the management), conducting internal audits, and preparing the entire organization for a full certification audit. Oh, and there was a stric and in some ways unachievable deadline!! Six months later, we successfully achieved ISO 9001 certification. But certification was only the beginning. Over the following years, I continued to develop the management system and work with the organization to turn the standard into a strategic advantage rather than an administrative burden. When used correctly, ISO standards create clarity, improve decision-making, and strengthen both quality and resilience without slowing the business down. Along the way, I also learned something just as important. ISO implementation is rarely a technical challenge. More often, it is an organizational one. Resistance, uncertainty, and misaligned expectations can quietly undermine even the best-designed systems. I could clearly see where the next improvements were needed and how much value could be unlocked if those challenges were addressed properly. I could see the strategic advantages for implementing a QMS. That insight is what led me to become an independent ISO consultant. Today, I help organizations implement and use ISO 9001 and ISO 27001 in a way that supports their business, rather than constraining it.
